We’re offering these social activities all week at various times. Enjoy Washington, D.C., sites together and, when the activity is over, you can plan to meet again in the convention center via INTAconnect!

Monuments by Moonlight

The best thing to experience when visiting the Nation’s Capital is the monuments and memorials on the National Mall when they come alive at night. Observe these magnificent sites lit up against the night sky for the most dramatic and inspiring views of these majestic structures. You will first head over the river to the Iwo Jima Memorial, along the way seeing the Jefferson Memorial, Memorial Bridge, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Kennedy Center. The tour will continue back in D.C. passing by the White House, following a stop at the US Capitol building. After departing, you will pass by the Washington Monument and stop at the WWII Memorial. The last stop on the tour will be the Lincoln Memorial.

In 1921, President Woodrow Wilson and his wife Edith retired from the White House and moved to a grand Georgian Revival house on Embassy Row. The house has been historically preserved, and in 1963, the National Trust for Historic Preservation opened the doors of the house as a museum—a time capsule from 1924. During this private, behind-the-scenes tour, you will learn about the architecture of this 1915 home designed by prominent masonic Washington architect Waddy Butler Wood. From the elegant drawing room to “the best closets in Washington,” you’ll be enthralled with the thoughtful design of this turn of the century home. While not touring, you’ll enjoy playing a variety of table games in the grand parlor as you mix, mingle, and travel back into another era.

An Afternoon in Old Town

Old Town Alexandria is a quaint historic district just on the other side of the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., and National Harbor. You will begin this private tour rotating between the Archeology Museum and a walking tour. You will hear from one of Alexandria’s archeologists about findings over the years in Old Town Alexandria beginning with an introduction to archaeology in Alexandria, their role as part of the city, and then a focus on an archaeological site. Possible sites include the most recent find—four ships along the city’s waterfront. Other important finds include the excavation that led to the African American Heritage Park in Alexandria and The Lee Street Site, an excavation of one city block that presented a microcosm of the city, including 18th century wharves, 19th century residences, shops, taverns and warehouses, and a support complex for Union hospitals during the Civil War. The afternoon continues with a walking tour of Old Town Alexandria sites including Christ Church, Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary, and the Torpedo Factory. You’ll have some free time after the tour to explore King Street and the waterfront with the new connections you’ve made before heading back!
