About INTA
We’re a global association of brand owners and professionals dedicated to supporting trademarks and complementary intellectual property (IP) to foster consumer trust, economic growth, and innovation, and committed to building a better society through brands.
As a not-for-profit association, our role is to serve our members, the profession, and society as a trusted and influential advocate for the economic and social value of brands.
We were founded in 1878 by 17 merchants and manufacturers who saw a need for an organization “to protect and promote the rights of trademark owners, to secure useful legislation, and to give aid and encouragement to all efforts for the advancement and observance of trademark rights.” Since then, we have grown into a global community, with members around the world and offices in multiple regions.
Our membership comprises more than 6,700 organizations from 185 jurisdictions. The organizations represent nearly 37,000 professionals, including brand owners from major corporations, small- and medium-sized enterprises, law firms, and nonprofits. Our community also includes government agency members, professors, and law students.

Our most important asset is the talented and dedicated group of individuals who serve on our committees. From advising on policy positions to creating resources and communicating on key issues, their expertise and contributions enhance our work—benefiting industry stakeholders and society.
We speak for brand owners by working to foster effective laws and policies worldwide on trademark and related rights and to harmonize the implementation of those rights.
In a collaborative effort between dedicated volunteers and staff engaged in 19 advocacy committees, we strategically focus on the most pressing issues for brand protection and enforcement.
Our events embody the spirit of community. We integrate cutting-edge education and global expertise with unparalleled networking opportunities.
Among the many types of events we hold in various regions, or virtually, our renowned Annual Meeting is the largest—and it’s also the largest gathering of brand owners and IP professionals in the world.
We offer practical, on-the-ground information covering trademark and related areas of law throughout the world.
Our much-used resources include the INTA Practice Guides, reference and training tools, Fact Sheets, and our well-respected peer-reviewed journal, The Trademark Reporter. Our staff collaborate with more than 600 members to develop and update these resources.
Given the proliferation of counterfeiting worldwide, our awareness-raising campaign to educate young consumers about the value of trademarks and brands and the dangers of counterfeit products has been growing in importance and impact.
Our Unreal Campaign Committee and other volunteers are the backbone of this initiative, which reaches students in schools, at youth organizations, and virtually.
With trademarks impacting so many aspects of our daily lives, consumers—whether they realize it or not—can benefit from understanding this IP right and taking a closer look at brands. We provide the basics and explain hot-button issues, such as counterfeiting, in language that resonates with consumers.
