INTA Foundation and Queen Mary University of London Announce Grant for Papers on the Intersection of Intellectual Property and DEI

Published: May 1, 2023

New York, New York—May 1, 2023—The INTA Foundation, with its mission to expand educational and professional development opportunities in intellectual property (IP) for diverse, under-represented populations around the world, has joined together with Queen Mary University of London’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) to establish and fund a writing competition.

The competition will select the three best LL.M dissertation essays that explore IP law in relation to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Enrolled students are invited to submit 10,000 word research papers that address multi-jurisdictional research exploring themes such as access to IP and the trademark profession for diverse populations or the impact of IP on diverse populations.

The essays will be judged by CCLS faculty members who will make the final selection with input from senior members of the INTA Foundation Board of Governors. The call for papers went out in January 2023 and winners will be informed by November 2023. The three winners will share the £10,000 grant money and the first prize winner will also have the opportunity to work with the Director of Queen Mary Intellectual Property Institute to ensure the publication of the essay in a leading US law journal.

“The INTA Foundation is working with academic institutions all over the globe to create a more inclusive IP community. I am proud to be on the Board of an organization that seeks to improve access to and explore the opportunities of the IP world. I am also proud to see the very positive and constructive response we receive from world leading academic institutions such as Queen Mary University when teaming up with us for a joint project,” said INTA Foundation Governor Burkhart Goebel (Hogan Lovells International LLP, Germany/Spain).

Professor Uma Suthersanen, Director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute, said: “We are extremely grateful to the INTA Foundation for this generosity and recognition of our postgraduate students’ academic achievements. Moreover, these prizes support Queen Mary’s nationally recognized work in promoting such inclusive values and being named the best university in the United Kingdom for social mobility. We hope to continue this fruitful partnership into the future.”
