According to some estimates, more than half the world’s voting population in more than 70 jurisdictions globally will participate in national elections in 2024.

INTA is drafting reports covering select elections during this election cycle. These Election Reports—an exclusive INTA Member benefit—will offer a detailed overview of the political shifts and their potential influence on intellectual property (IP) policy and will explore how these shifts may affect INTA member organizations. These Reports will also examine the evolving dynamics in trade, security, and sustainability.

The 2024 European Union (EU) elections have concluded, marking a pivotal moment in shaping the future trajectory of the EU. The newly elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and of the Commission (Commissioners) will shape the EU’s legislative agenda, policy direction, and strategic priorities for the next five years.

INTA’s EU Election Report offers a detailed overview of the political shifts in the EU and their potential influence on IP policy. It will be especially helpful for those who are not EU based, to help them understand not only the outcome of these particular elections but also the general functioning of the EU government as it relates to IP.

The Report also outlines the functioning of the main EU institutions (the Commission, the Parliament, and the Council) and delves into the potential impact of the 2024 elections on key EU priorities related to IP. It explores how the elections have implications for businesses, innovators, and investors, both within and outside the EU, offering insights into the potential shifts in the regulatory and economic landscape.

As the EU navigates this new political chapter, understanding the ramifications of the 2024 elections as well as how EU institutions generally function is crucial. This Report provides a comprehensive analysis to guide stakeholders (both EU- and non-EU based) in navigating the EU political and commercial landscape of the EU and in anticipating and adapting to the evolving EU priorities and their broader impact on the promotion, protection, management, and commercialization of intangible assets.

This Report provides a snapshot of the present moment, but as with all information—especially information relating to geopolitical events like elections—things will continue to change and evolve from here.
