The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has taken a notable step by publishing its inaugural sound trademark. This rare instance highlights the expanding recognition of non-conventional trademarks in the region.

The sound mark, categorized under Class 35 of the Nice Classification, covers activities such as advertising, business management, administrative services, and office operations. The application was filed on March 17, 2024, and was officially published on November 28, 2024.

Notably, this is the first sound trademark applied for, and which SAIP has published, on its new portal. The portal was launched in December 2023 and includes a dedicated publication website designed to streamline trademark applications and publications.

Although sound trademarks are widely acknowledged in jurisdictions globally, their introduction in the Middle East remains limited. SAIP’s decision to accommodate such trademarks underscores its commitment to modernizing its intellectual property regime and adopting global standards.
