In Memoriam: Peter Harvey
Published: June 1, 2022
It is with great sadness we announce that INTA Past Counsel Peter Harvey passed away on May 15, 2022, at age 74. He was both a longtime and highly respected leader within the intellectual property field and a dear friend and colleague to many in the INTA community.
Mr. Harvey graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (USA), in 1969, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (USA) in 1972. During a career spanning more than four decades, he became a leader in the trademark profession. In 2000, he co-founded Harvey Siskind, LLP in San Francisco, California (USA), and in 2017, he founded Harvey & Company IP, a law firm with a focus on trademarks, trade dress, copyright, trade secrets, and unfair competition litigation in the United States, also based in San Francisco, California.
An active INTA member for more than three decades, Mr. Harvey served on numerous committees, with leadership roles in many instances. He served on the INTA Board of Directors on three occasions, from 1994 to 1995, and 2000 to 2001, and in 2008 to 2009, when he served as INTA Counsel.
Mr. Harvey played an instrumental role in expanding INTA’s global reach. Notably, he was an enthusiastic proponent of the internationalization of the United States Trademark Association (USTA), as INTA was originally founded; and, in leading the International Committee, he helped the Association re-establish itself as INTA. Many of the task forces created under the International Committee subsequently became permanent committees focusing on different regions of the world. Mr. Harvey was awarded the President’s Award in 2012 in recognition of these achievements.
“Peter was a man of intelligence, wit, and grace. The world is a lesser place without my sweet friend Peter Harvey.” — J. Scott Evans, Adobe, Inc. (USA)
“I’ve known Peter since I started at INTA. Over the years, we always looked forward to seeing each other at the Annual and Leadership Meetings to share a joke. This hits hard. He will be greatly missed.” — Bruce MacPherson, INTA (USA)
“Peter was INTA Counsel when I joined the Board of Directors the first time and, from then on, he became a dear friend. He was always so warm and welcoming to me and others, always at the ready with a smile and a cheery disposition. It is a loss for me, both personally and professionally, as I’m sure it is for those who knew and loved him.” — Deborah A. Hampton, The Chemours Company FC, LLC (USA)
“He was one of INTA’s true lights.” — Lori Schulman, INTA (USA)
Mr. Harvey is survived by his children Thomas (Leslie) Harvey, Peter (Meredith) Harvey, and Douglas Harvey; and his three grandchildren, Virginia Harvey, Charles Harvey, and Calvin Harvey.
A memorial service will be held on June 3, 2022, at 3:00 pm PST, at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, 2325 Union Street, San Francisco, California. The service will be streamed virtually on the church’s Facebook page.
