In November, INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo led a high-level delegation to China, engaging with government officials, local members, and other key stakeholders of the Chinese intellectual property (IP) community. The delegation achieved fruitful results, not only in its deepened partnership with government and industry organizations, but also in its strong support of Chinese businesses in their global expansion.

Notably, INTA and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), signed a memorandum of understanding, reaffirming its commitment to providing support to Chinese businesses and increasing awareness of IP worldwide.

During the visit, Mr. Sanz de Acedo delivered a keynote speech at the 2024 China International Supply Chain Expo, emphasizing the crucial role of IP in global supply chains and China’s pivotal role in this ecosystem.

Mr. Sanz de Acedo also launched INTA’s Know Before You Go report series. Drafted in Mandarin, this set of 14 jurisdiction-specific guides is designed to equip Chinese brand owners with the essential knowledge and actionable strategies necessary to protect their IP abroad and navigate the complexities of the international market, and it covers the main areas of IP prosecution, enforcement, and strategies of IP protection. The 14 jurisdictions covered in the report series are Cambodia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Also worth noting, Tong Bo, Deputy Director-General of State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), provided an update on SAMR’s latest initiative on regulating online marketplaces, the Self-Regulation Conventions, which regulate 81 e-commerce platforms from China.

The delegation also met with key government and judiciary officials and raised the practical and critical concerns of its global membership. In particular, Li Jian, Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court of China commended INTA for its pivotal role in fostering international cooperation, and said he looks forward to participating in the 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, next May.
