The Academic Committee invites academics, practitioners, students, and members of the INTA community at large to present papers at the Trademark Scholarship Symposium (TMSS) taking place at the 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, USA.

The call for submissions will open on January 1, 2025. The TMSS is accepting works in progress as well as polished drafts, encouraging authors to share their scholarly articles and research projects on topics relevant to intellectual property, trademark law, and other complementary areas of law. Small-group discussions will take place, allowing participants to hear observations that might improve or bring new light to their ongoing research, whether they are in the early stages or further along in their work. While there is no obligation, participants are welcome to submit final papers to The Trademark Reporter, INTA’s bimonthly, peer-reviewed academic journal, for potential publication consideration.

With an 18 percent increase in submissions year-over-year and the high level of quality in the presented works, the 2024 TMSS was a success, leading to lively discussions and feedback during the presentation. The papers presented in 2024 covered a diverse range of topics and included the following:

  • Trademark Overreach and the Role of E-Commerce Platforms;
  • Economic Underpinnings of Co-branding Agreements;
  • The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Brand Identity and Consumer Trust; and
  • The Tension Between Ornamentation in Trademarks and Merchandising a Brand.

INTA members are invited to participate in the 2025 TMSS as presenters, commentators, or audience members and are welcome to spread the news across their academic and professional circles to help INTA reach those interested in IP and continue the Association’s educational mission.

Finally, there is an added bonus for students: students whose papers are selected will be granted complementary registration for the 2025 Annual Meeting (travel expenses not included).
