Published: November 12, 2024

New Orleans, Louisiana—November 12, 2024—The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced that Guerra IP, an intellectual property law firm in Porto Alegre, Brazil, won INTA’s 2024 Members for a Better Society Award in the “Organization” category.

The INTA Members for a Better Society Award is presented to an INTA member organization or one or more individuals of a member organization who have demonstrated during the year how brands positively impact society and build consumer trust through initiatives relating to: (a) corporate social responsibility; (b) diversity and inclusion; or (c) pro bono legal services.

Starting as a family law firm in Brazil, Guerra IP now manages intellectual property litigation and prosecution on a global scale, serving both national and international clients. Under the leadership of Cristina Guerra, Partner at Guerra IP, the firm has significantly expanded its pro bono efforts, using its extensive knowledge to support those in need.

Among Guerra IP’s current pro bono clients are Children Cancer Institute and Women League for Combating Cancer in Rio Grande do Sul, both of which are dedicated to cancer prevention and treatment; Friendly Hand Association, which provides shelter to elderly people; and STEPS (Society of Tennis, Education and Social Participation), an organization dedicated to educating youth of low-income families through sports and citizenship. These four pro bono beneficiaries together own more than fifty trademarks.

“Receiving this award on behalf of my firm is very important to me as a professional because it is a recognition of our hard and long-term work to help improve the quality of life of our community and ultimately our society,” said Ms. Guerra. “The award also signals that it is possible, if not totally necessary, to adjust our professional practice to reflect the needs of our community. This award encourages trademark professionals to get involved in their communities and to use their leadership to improve people’s lives.”

INTA President Dana Northcott congratulated Guerra IP: “It is an amazing accomplishment to provide pro bono legal services in underrepresented communities. Guerra IP has worked to increase equity in our justice system.”

This year’s INTA awards were presented today during an awards ceremony at the Association’s 2024 Leadership Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. INTA also awarded Cynthia Cohen (Verdict Success LLC, USA) with the Members for a Better Society Award.
