Noreen Maghimbi of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Jodutt Basrawi of New York, New York Win the International Trademark Association’s Tomorrow’s Leader Award

Published: November 12, 2024

New Orleans, Louisiana—November 12, 2024—The International Trademark Association (INTA) has honored Noreen Maghimbi, Associate at Extent Corporate Advisory in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Jodutt Basrawi, Associate at Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP in New York, New York, USA, as the 2024 recipients of INTA’s Tomorrow’s Leader Award.

The Tomorrow’s Leader Award recognizes two outstanding young practitioners with less than five years of IP experience for their early leadership in the intellectual property (IP) industry. This award was established to strengthen both professional and personal development for the recipients and raise their visibility as tomorrow’s leaders within the trademark community.

While still early in her career, Ms. Maghimbi has already established an impressive resume in the IP field. She assists clients in understanding and navigating trademark registration in both Tanzania and Zanzibar. She also undertakes pro bono projects, including an initiative to equip women, youth, and people with disabilities with the essential legal knowledge and support to formalize their businesses. Through these activities, Ms. Maghimbi reaffirms her commitment to supporting equitable access to legal resources and advancing the protection of IP rights. She is also an active member of INTA’s Harmonization of Trademarks Committee.

“It is an incredible honor to be the recipient of INTA’s 2024 Tomorrow’s Leader Award,” said Ms. Maghimbi. “This recognition reflects not only the dedication and passion I have invested in my career but also the exceptional support and mentorship I have received from Extent Corporate Advisory. INTA has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to network and work alongside global IP experts, and I am proud to be a part of and contribute to such a dynamic and forward-thinking community.”

Mr. Basrawi’s previous experience as a patent examiner has bolstered his short but impactful career in IP thus far. Pivoting to the legal field, he has engaged in pro bono work regarding trademark strategies for two non-profit organizations, one of which involves a trademark application for a pet clothing brand. He has also been a mock trial coach for students at LaGuardia High School in New York City. Much of Mr. Basrawi’s passion for trademark law derives from his Syrian heritage and his belief that IP drives innovation and defends essential freedoms. He is a member of INTA’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee.

“This award affirms that important, smart, and capable people from all over the world either share or support my belief that IP is a catalyst for human potential in every community worldwide,” said Mr. Basrawi. “Being involved with INTA has positively impacted my career by connecting me with a remarkable network of people who share my passion for using trademark law, and its many intersecting topics, to make our communities better places.”

In congratulating Ms. Maghimbi and Mr. Basrawi, INTA President Dana Northcott noted, “INTA is so impressed with both Mr. Basrawi’s and Ms. Maghimbi’s accomplishments at their firms and in the IP community. We look forward to seeing them continue to grow as IP professionals and to celebrating their future achievements in the years to come.”

This year’s INTA awards were presented today during an awards ceremony at the Association’s 2024 Leadership Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
