New Orleans, Louisiana—November 12, 2024—The International Trademark Association (INTA) has honored Mitchell Adams, Senior Lecturer and LLB Course Director at Swinburne Law School of the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, as the recipient of INTA’s 2024 Pattishall Medal for Teaching Excellence.

Pattishall, McAuliffe, Newbury, Hilliard & Geraldson LLP established the Pattishall Medal for Teaching Excellence in honor of Beverly W. Pattishall, a pioneer in trademark law and education. The award recognizes educators in the business and legal fields for outstanding instruction in the trademark and trade identity field.

Dr. Adams structures his classroom around immersive, experiential learning to prepare students for the practice of trademark law. He pioneered the use of augmented reality technology in legal education, developing workshops for high school students studying law, civics, and business. He is widely recognized for his excellence in teaching; he was named Academic of the Year at the 2022 Australian Law Awards, received the Swinburne Dean’s Excellence Award in 2021, and won a Swinburne Faculty Teaching Award in 2019.

“Receiving the Pattishall Medal for Teaching Excellence validates my commitment to reimagining how we teach trademark law. Throughout my career, I have strived to create authentic learning experiences that bridge the gap between theory and practice—through technology-enabled learning and hands-on simulations,” said Dr. Adams. “The International Trademark Association has been invaluable in connecting me with a global community of practitioners who share my vision of preparing the next generation of trademark professionals.”

“Dr. Adams’ impact on the instruction of trademark law and, therefore, on his students, is profound,” said INTA President Dana Northcott. “His work elevates the standard of teaching and fosters future generations of IP professionals who will excel in their practice.”

This year’s INTA awards were presented today during an awards ceremony at the Association’s 2024 Leadership Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
